LITTLE MOMENTS, BIG MAGIC

Stories and Testimonials

From time to time, we ask our mentors for feedback, with questions like this one to Bob (mentor):

Question: Could you send us an email telling me how things are going between you and Kenny?  We have to document how the match is going after the first two weeks and once a month thereafter.

It's been going well.

Last Saturday I brought him over to the house and we fixed his bicycle.  I showed him what to do and how to use the tools and HE WANTED TO DO IT.  He also washed his bike and had a good time playing with the dog.

We went to the park and played basketball for a while before we hiked to the top of Hook Mt. where we ate lunch.  He enjoyed the hike but once we got there he asked if we could leave and he said it was because there were too many ants and they would get on our sandwiches.  After talking to him I found out it wasn't the ants, that he was afraid that there might be bears in the woods.  I assured him that there weren't any bears in that area and if there were that they were more afraid of us and would run the other way if they heard us or smelled us coming.

He also asked me how long I would be his Big Brother so we spoke about that.  I told him that it doesn't really have to ever end if we don't want it to.  That there was a one year guarantee and after that it was up to the both of us.

We had a good time and I could tell by the look on his face that he enjoyed the change of scenery and change of experiences.  He's a good kid and I'm so glad I took this on.  He's like a sponge and I realize that he has never really had anyone to show him a whole lot and I realize how much there is for me to give him…and that's gratifying.
