I’m so glad I took this on. He’s like a sponge and I realize that he has never really had anyone to show him a whole lot and I realize how much there is for me to give him…and that’s gratifying.

-Bob (Big Brother)

LITTLE MOMENTS, BIG MAGIC

How to Volunteer

Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is about one thing. It's about sharing simple activities with a child – MAGIC filled activities that become hallmark moments in a child's life. Perhaps a first trip to the beach. An afternoon at a ball game. A visit to the library or museum. Even something as simple as a walk in the park or telling ghost stories around the campfire can have profound life- and skill-building effects for your Little. There is, however, one note of caution: Don't be surprised if you're the one that ends up having the time of your life.

Wanted: a few good men -AND- women

Every volunteer, and every donor, is a valued part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters community. We are grateful for the men and women who have given of themselves and raised their hands. RIGHT NOW WE NEED YOU!!!!

At this time the need is especially great for men to serve as Big Brothers, and for generous donations to help spearhead recruitment efforts. About 70% of youth currently waiting for a Big are male, but only three out of every 10 volunteer inquiries come from men. On average, a boy will end up waiting more than 33% longer for a Big than a girl.

Throughout our county boys and young men are looking for someone to have fun with. Maybe toss a ball or take a bike ride - maybe even help answer the “tough” questions about becoming a man.

Here's how you can help right now: If you're a man who can give just four hours a month to enrich the life of a young boy, please volunteer today. If you know someone who has what it takes to be a Big Brother, please forward this page to him and tell him how much he's needed, how much fun he'll have - and what a wonderful difference he can make!

Whether you're a man or a woman, you can make a donation today, to help with recruitment, and to help make wonderful, mentoring magic.

A quick note to our women volunteers: We need you, too! We won't be satisfied until every young woman who is looking for a match has a Big Sister of her own. Thank you.

  • Must have transportation and are covered under automobile insurance.
  • Must be able to commit to volunteer for a minimum of four hours a month for one year.

Family Partnerships:

The Loso Family Partnership
A Family Partnership is a match very similar to a one-to-one match, except that a couple (married or engaged) is matched together with one Little Brother. The same principles apply to all of our matches: mentors must commit to meet with the Little for a minimum of four hours a month for one year, and Bigs and Littles still aim to have lots of fun together by visiting a park, getting some ice cream, going to the movies, etc. Being matched with a couple, (rather than just one adult), can benefit the child immensely by exposing him to a caring, respectful adult relationship. The couple can spend time with a Little as a couple, or if the spouse is particularly busy one week, then the other can spend time with the Little individually. If the couple has a child(ren) who would also like to be a part of the match, they are welcome! Just keep in mind that the primary focus is to encourage the Little to interact with the adult male in the match.

Please contact us if you are interested in learning more about the Family Partnership.

A Word from the Chairman of the Board:

To the extent of volunteerism being measurement of a healthy organization, such as ours and as Chairman of the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland County, I am here to inform you that the pulse of our organization is vibrant, healthy and strong. Our Board of Directors are all volunteers who represent a cross section of our community. They are business people, professionals and from different social backgrounds committing their time to assure that BBBSofRC follows national procedures and organizational policies. Our Mentors ensure that our program continues, and they provide as role models templates for their Mentees to follow, filling the gaps that are missing from their family life. Helping them to make better decisions that would have hindered or altered negatively rather than positively, supporting them to complete their high school education with encouragement to go onto a higher education. Helping them to become more productive members of our community in hope of reaching back one day to help someone else in need. “Thank you for what you as volunteers have done for this organization in time, commitment and dedication along with our devoted staff. We wouldn’t be where we are today making the continuous strives for a more successful tomorrow without you.”
